M81 is the primary galaxy in the group of galaxies which are closest to the Milky Way/ Andromeda group, and is similar to our local group of galaxies.
In the image you see M81 a grand spiral galaxy with the blue star forming arms, and the core of older cooler stars.
M82 is a starburst galaxy, with density waves stirred up by a close encounter with M81, driving gas and dust together, we can see the Hydrogen gas emitting light in the red colour. The compressed gas creates many new stars.
We also see Holmburg IX, the blue blob to the side of M81, this is a small irregular galaxy, and satellite galaxy of M81.
