The Horsehead is a dark nebula, also known as Barnard 33. It is in front of IC 434, which is a light nebula.The Horsehead is 1,500 ly away & is 3.5 ly across.
It is made up of thick dust, & the red glow behind it is hydrogen gas which is ionized by Sigma Orionis.
