Lava spread across villages and farms

In 2021 More than 7,000 people had to leave their homes. Over 1,300 homes were destroyed by the lava flow. Our guide was one of those who had to leave their home. No-one died.
Many other buildings, such as churches and schools, were damaged or destroyed.
Hundreds of acres of farmland, including banana plantations, were destroyed.

The Army helped re-house victims and the government paid compensation to those who lost homes and businesses.
